Bianca, my lil boo-boo

| | Comments (0)

414084-lg.jpg

This is a photo of Bianca in her younger and healthier days...6 years ago or so, back when we lived in Fairfax and I still took a camera with me wherever I went and shot actual film. I still have the print and the negative in the basement with the rest of my photography.

I got this print back and thought “I'm just a little girl in this great big world” was a good caption/title. She was a little chubby then...a lot more than she has been lately....but she's still our little girl.

Later tonight, she's not going to be with us anymore and we're going to miss her.

It's amazing to learn how much I took having hot running water for granted.

Sometime on Tuesday, the hot water heater stopped working. I tried restarting it (I am a computer guy after all) but it didn't help. Called for a plumber and through some schedule and parts issues, the house has been without hot water for almost 4 days. Boiling water for some things, and just sucking it up with cold water for others. Dishes stacked up and so did some of the laundry. Shaving's been pretty awful too when I didn't have the patience to microwave more water.

The problem ended up being the igniter in the water heater (it's natural gas powered). It got fixed this morning finally. I had a great time washing my hands in wonderful, glorious hot water a few minutes ago. I'm going to try not to take hot running water for granted again, too.

Blogging activity

Since I got back from vacation, I decided that I wanted to make a more concentrated effort to put more into this site. Just looking at the front page, though it doesn't look like I succeeded but I actually am getting some things done.

Once I got Movable Type set up I started moving entries over from what used to be a photo blog that I ran on the site separate from the main blog. Most of the entries from that side are from 2003-2005 (I'm currently halfway through April 2003) so none of that stuff is going to show up as new on the RSS feeds. Because I'm moving the entries over using MT's Asset management system, the photos are showing up under the Photo widget to the right of where my normal entry text goes.

Once I'm all caught up on the archives, things should start getting somewhat back to normal around here, whatever that is.

MT4 Up and Working

| | Comments (0)

For some reason, whenever I do a major release upgrade on Movable Type, I have problems with the templates and stylesheets. I do the upgrade, and all of the design elements of the site stay the way they were so when I try to use a new “Style” it breaks.

To fix it, I had to create a test blog so MT4 will create a fresh set of templates and then copy them over to the old blog.

I’m going to stick with the new column layout, I think. Over the next few days I’m going to try to get the content of the right-side bars set. Once that’s done, I’ll get into some of the new things in MT4 (Assets? Finally.) and maybe do a little tweaking. In between, I have a couple of things to post related to vacation.

Looks like ecto isn't working with my upgraded MT install. Nice. At least the posting interface is improved.

Going to be a little weird while I figure stuff out.

I was feeling pretty good a couple of weeks ago when I chemically unclogged the master bathroom sink. A couple days ago, Margo went to get something out from under the kitchen sink to find everything soaked. Great. A plumbing leak in the kitchen.

Me being a gadget guy, I start thinking that it's a good reason to get one of those new disposals that can take a pineapple (the Insinkerator Evolution Excel). Sweet. Oops....lowest price I can find on it is $270 and highest was $500. Ouch.

I get back under the sink to see if maybe the problem is something other than the disposal. Running water isn't leaking out anywhere. When I turn the disposal on, water comes shooting out of a hole in its side. Great.

So I'm ordering a cheaper disposal tonight and when it comes in, I'm going to try to install it. I have a plumber ready to take care of it if I can't get it together. When I first bought this place, I never thought I'd have to learn plumbing.

A long time ago, I had decided to separate my photographs from the main blog here. The intent at the time was for this site to be more for showing my photography than to be a "blog". As time went on though, I decided that I wasn't up to retouching my prints after they had been scanned, so most of what ended up in the /photo blog was stuff from the digital camera.

I've decided that there's really no good reason to keep the photos separate from the main blog here. They're as much a part of my online persona as the writing here is, so I might as well stop maintaining an artificial separation of the two.

Over the next few days I'll be moving the photo posts over. They'll be added with their original posting dates, so they shouldn't flood the RSS feed. The ones that are done so far haven't, so it should be OK. Anyone that gets a Google Images link here might not find what they're looking for until I get a reindex though.

I added my coComment feed to the right sidebar today. I've been meaning to do it for a while but didn't get around to it for a bunch of different reasons.

I tend to comment out there in the world more often than I write here. coComment is a good way for me to keep track of those discussions...when I remember to tag them. Maybe making them more public will serve to make me remember more.

There's still some work I want to do with the design of the site (it's too narrow, for example). I'm not a developer though so that's going to happen really slowly.

So I started feeling sick Thursday afternoon. Went home from work, started taking meds for the symptoms. Felt a little better on Friday but got worse on Saturday and a lot worse on Sunday. Went to the local Urgent Care Sunday night and it turns out that I have pneumonia. So I'm on better drugs now and I'm off work at least for today and tomorrow.

In the middle of all that, I got an email Saturday night from Jaqueline van Bierk of the band Otto's Daughter.

This probably needs a little background info before I go into the email though...

Starting in October sometime and running through 30 November, they were running a pre-order special for their upcoming album "A New Kind of Heroine". Pre-orders get a poster, get their CD signed, an early download of one of the tracks (The Truth...good stuff. You can stream it from their MySpace page), a listing on a thank you list when the album comes out, and a chance to win a Daisy Rock Dark Star guitar. I like signed stuff. I pre-ordered Becoming 001 and got it signed too, so it seemed natural to go for it again.

Back to the email...

The email was to let me know that they had the drawing and that I won the guitar! I never expected to win it. I don't even know how to play. But I'll learn to play it when it arrives...it really is a beautiful guitar and it would be a shame to have it just sit around and not get used. Who knows. Maybe this will be the making of a new rock star.

They had the drawing at their show on 15 December at The Gig (video is here, watch the whole set, the drawing's after the last song at about the 30 minute mark).

Last night they posted a three part set of videos of them packaging the guitar up and adding some extra stuff into the box while they're at it. I think I do need some staples, but it looks like they got taken back out of the box. Oh well. I hope the screw with a nut makes it through OK. G put in his sticks from the show which was a really nice gesture. Mo's guitar strap made it in there, but it doesn't look like he knew about it. Picks are always good. Too bad the chair and the stand didn't fit.

The Guitar packing part one
The Guitar packing part two
The Guitar packing part three

Many, many thanks to Otto's Daughter collectively for having the contest and then taking the time to turn it into a unique package of stuff. It's become quite a bright spot in a rather crappy couple of weeks. I'll take good care of it and maybe play some good music on it some day. And when they make it out this way, I'll be taking them up on Jim's offer to get it signed.

They want me to send them a picture of me with the guitar when it comes, so at some point I'll have an update post here with the pictures I took while opening it all up.

I'm playing around with the layout a bit today. I worked out how to add a third column. I'm planning on adding some things in the sidebars that would be too much if I only had one column to put them in.

Problem at the moment is that the overall width set in the current template (actually in the stylesheet for MovableType) is set too narrow, so the middle column ("beta"...where the content is now) is getting squashed.

I'm a sysadmin, not a programmer, so it takes me a little longer than normal to straighten things like this out. Will get there. I'll try not to post anything too wide til I get it worked out.

Since the upgrade to MT 3.31, I noticed that I lost the formatting of the entries in the ATOM feed for the site. I also stopped using ecto to post entries at the same time, which seems to be the problem.

When I first did the upgrade, I was getting some errors pushing posts from ecto to the site so I started using the MT New Entry form to get the past several posts done. I'm not sure what the MT forms are doing that makes the feeds lose their formatting.

The problem is resolving the tagging issue now. Ecto (as of 2.4.1) doesn't support Movable Type 3.31's new tagging system so if I want to use the MT tags, I have to go back into the MT forms interface. I would like to see the MT tags translate back to Technorati tags somehow. And I'm not sure what sense it makes to have both Categories and Tags on the blog to group similar posts together. To me it seems that the only difference between the two at the moment is that it's easier to add tags than categories to a post in the default Movable Type form.

If I was smarter about coding, I'd add something to MT to take the MT tags, and convert them to Technorati tags when displaying them on the entry. Then I wouldn't have to worry if things are getting tagged correctly externally. I might get some ideas while I'm having dog-related insomnia this week.

Since I upgraded my MovableType I've been doing some playing around with the StyleCatcher. StyleCatcher is a plugin that is supposed to provide an easier way to find and install new themes for your MT blog.

It hasn't been working at all so my blog has been looking pretty messed up since I started tinkering with it.

Today I figured out what the problem is.

This version of the blog is a couple years old, having started out on some 2.x version of Movable Type. Each time an upgrade would come out, I'd update the code and the database and be done with it. I never messed with the templates, really so I didn't know that there were some pretty big changes in the templates since this site was rebuilt. The old tags in the old Main Index template wasn't translating back to what the system was using to call the Style elements.

I created a new blog from scratch and copied its Main Index template and now things are looking pretty good.

I switched the sidebar over to using the new Widget Manager while I was at it.

Since the Upgrade, I've been playing around with the site a bit. There were some things that weren't working right. I think most of those are fixed now.

I'm messing with the templates a bit. MovableType added a plugin called the StyleCatcher that makes it easy to change the theme on your blog. Aparently you still need to change your templates to make the elements fit into the new theme.

I was running a 2.x theme probably, so I'm catching up here. Things might look a little weird over the next couple days. Please excuse the mess

Blame it on the rain

| | Comments (0)

It's been raining here in the Washington DC area since last Thursday night. The news yesterday said that Centreville has had almost 10 inches of rain since then. Today's supposed to be the last day for a while, but they're calling for another 2-4 inches of rain today before it's done. Lots of flooding all over from what I've heard. The golf course near my office has a creek running through it and it looks like it went over its banks yesterday, covering the bridges back and forth across it. It'll be interesting to see what happens when we get what's coming tonight.

My lawn looks fantastic at least. It looks like it's a foot high in places, but it's all thick and green. I'm happily surprised that it came back like that with the rain. I try not to water it, being a subscriber of the Organic Lawncare for the Cheap and Lazy method, and I'd forgotten how it looks when the lawn is completely hydrated. I tended to take the watering thing a little too far and not water it at all, so while my lawn is pretty tough during droughts, I'm learning that it's probably a lot more dehydrated than it should be.

So much for being completely low-maintenance. :)

Back online, I think..

| | Comments (0)

Just another non-update. I'm mostly recovered from my hard drive crash. I'm missing some preferences in my applications. I might decide to just reinstall the applications and get it over with. Will see.

I'm having some allergy issues and am trying out some new drugs, so I'm a little tired to go into details on the recovery. I have a couple "It could happen to you" bits that I learned along the way. I'm going to try to get that out of the way in the next day or two.

Also before I was so rudely interrupted by this disk crash, I was working on a post about learning one's place in the blogosphere. That one's going to take some more work so it might have to wait til things calm down at work.

Blog...interrupted...

| | Comments (0)

I bet that title gets used a lot in blogging. Oh well.

I'm kinda offline for a little while. My Powerbook's hard drive started to fail over the weekend. Late Sunday and last night I was trying to see if there was anything I could do to stop the problem progression. I gave up last night. Today on the way home, I'm going to make a pit stop and get a new hard drive, and an external drive enclosure and maybe an extra external drive too.

Once the hardware comes home, I need to swap the drives install my OS back and do a backup restore. Then I need to see what I can salvage from the old disk from its external enclosure (I didn't have my music on backup), reinstall some software, etc. It might be a couple days before I'm completely back online again.

With the other external disk, I'm going to set it up as another backup disk...and I'll be archiving complete disk images to it. This crash could have been worse if I had no backups at all but it's going to be really inconvenient and time consuming. It wouldn't have been if I'd spent the time and money up front to protect myself.

Fun.

Inspired by Duffbert most recently, here's a list of search phrases that some folks used to get here in March.

marilyn manson wedding pictures (with several variations) - This link shows up if you use GIS...I happened to post some of my wedding pictures and something about Marilyn Manson in the same month. Google remembers parts of the blog that MovableType forgot. One of these days I'm going to reimport all that stuff.

luau - I like them, I've blogged a few photos of them, mostly related to the wedding. I think I might have to do a post on the history of this blog some day.

ipod video leak - Here I was hoping that we'd get that new iPod video. Oh well.

orient bay - Beautiful beach in St Martin. I have a few pictures on the site somewhere. Not of the nude resort part.

cremation furnace - Here is that picture. I did some photography around my office when I first started working there.

ipod nano autofill - I'm glad I'm not the only one

lollapalooza festival - I think there's a scan of a ticket on the site somewhere.

gartner detroit nokia 9300 - I have no idea. I didn't think that I even posted anything about my playing with a 9300 on the blog.

favorite podcasts - I've posted mine, what are yours?

mages of sunset over the ocean - mmmmm...making me itch for summertime

That's all for now. Have a good night all...

MT Spam and Comments

| | Comments (0)

I've noticed that more comments seem to get put into Junk than not with the comment spam settings I have set. Will work on that tonight. There has to be a better way to balance spam protection and letting real people post.

Will try to make some adustments over the next few days.

Update: Got it. It was tagging comments as Junk that had email addresses and/or URLs that have previously been entered in a comment. Makes sense, I guess. Hopefully that won't draw any more spam.

Blogging the FiOS Install

| | Comments (0)

I'm staying home from work today to be here for my Verizon FiOS install. I won't be posting this until after the install is done and the service is running, but it will be written as things happen. Hopefully the install will go smooth and this post will serve to inform people in the future about the service and install and what they'll be getting into. I was going to post pictures but Im having problems uploading pictures at the moment. Will fix that.

0752 - I have an install window of 0800-1700. Hopefully it'll start earlier rather than later because I got up early for this.

0942 - Still waiting.

1050 - The Verizon guy's here. Went off to light the fiber up. Here we go.

1430 - It's done. Relatively painless. No Fuss, no muss.

I wasn't getting a signal from the DLink router that came with the install, but I was going to swap my Linksys back in anyway so it's all good. I still need to pull cable from the corner of the house to the closet under the stairs so that the Linksys will be in a more central location in the house.

I'm getting just shy of 5m down and 2m up which is about where I was with the Cox cable internet service. I'll be trying a bump up to 15/2 soon.

I've been thinking of ways to handle my photos lately. It seems that the various changes to the website have messed up my archive of photos. When I find out I have to fix something, I try to spend some time thinking about how I'd like for it to work and then try out new ways to make it happen.

I never was completely happy with how I had the Photo blog set up. It's difficult to post a bunch of photos into with the ecto for a while to do the blog posts. I like it. The interface is clean, but feature-filled. All of the tagging (MovableType and Technorati) is a click away. I have buttons for links to my iTunes, Amazon and some other things. More important to this post is its link to iPhoto. I can easily browse my photo library and add a photo to the blog entry from there. I don't like how it's formatted and haven't figured out how to fix it.

Enter Flickr. All the cool kids in the blogosphere are using Flickr for their photo hosting. I'm not a huge fan of hosting my stuff in different places, but maybe that doesn't matter. The photos I've posted recently are in my Flickr account. It still takes more steps than I like to get something on the blog: once I export the photo to Flickr from iPhoto, I go to Flickr and push the new entry to the blog and then go back to ecto and add the Tehcnorati tags. Not efficient, but there are some interesting parts of Flickr that might overcome that. Will keep on with it for a while and see how it works out.

I've been keeping an eye on Verizon's FiOS service since I first saw it announced. The speeds they were selling and the price they're charging is hard to ignore, but I wasn't able to get the service. You have to have fiber run all the way to the house to get the service and we don't.

Or didn't. This fall, they ran fiber through our neighborhood. Yesterday a pair of friendly Verizon reps knocked on my door and let me know that I could get FiOS if I wanted it. They were offering $5 off per month for the first year. I bit.

I have an installation date of 17 Feb. That gives me til 17 March to change my mind. I'm actually planning on go-no-go by Wednesday just to be paranoid about it.

If I do go ahead, I will try to get lots of pictures.

Yeah. I guess so.

I hate resolutions. I should resolve not to resolve anything for New Years but that doesn't make much sense.

I will blog more this year.

I will try to be more of a part of the Domino community.

I will get a start on my music.

I will get to the things I have lined up for the site that i haven't gotten to yet: a fountain pen article and a review of the Nokia 9300.

Google and search

| | Comments (0)

I find it really strange that what seems to bring most people to this site is a search in Google images for "marilyn manson wedding".

It's the 7th result in the search. I know why the keywords come up...it's an archive from the photo blog where I posted some wedding-related stuff and a scan of a Marilyn Manson concert ticket from 1996. It's still strange to me that that's how most folks are getting here.

Blah.

The rest have to do with cakes and luaus, which are also part of the photo blog and my archive of pictures out there.

This site isn't #1 yet when you search for "Scott Gentzen" but I'm working on it. Would be nice if it came up in some different searches, but it would be nice if there was some useful content too.

Technorati and Blogrolls

| | Comments (0)

I didn't get around to posting the blogroll code yet. The plugin's installed, and I have a few blogs listed in it. I need to work out where and how I want to add the list to the pages on the site. That'll take some time and thinking...I'm still not a web dev.

On a related note, I "claimed" my blog at Technorati today. Don't know what that means yet. It seems like the hip thing to do. Maybe it'll help me pay more attention to the blog too. Also, hopefully, it'll help raise the visibility of the blog in Google, where searches for my name turn up some comments on someone else's blog first.

Blogroll Coming soon

| | Comments (0)

I got the MTBlogroll plugin working the other day finally. My problem with things on my MovableType install is that I can't remember where I'm actually supposed to put things. I installed everything in two different places in the beginning and I keep forgetting which is correct, so I end up being afraid to delete the wrong one.

Over the next couple of days, I will be putting in some of the blogs that I check out regularly, and then figure out how to post them to the site. :)

...or how I was reminded that it takes more than a love of beer to make it through events like this. Or maybe I'm just getting old.

This weekend was the Old Dominion Beer Fest at the Old Dominion Brewing Company in Ashburn, VA. Since I'd heard that it was going, I was excited about it. 50 (mostly) craft breweries all in a row ready and eager to sell a taste of their wares.

Of those that I remember, I liked Rogue's Dead Guy Ale and Delirium Tremens the best. I had other great beers...whose names escape me at the moment. I intentionally avoided breweries that I was familiar with so I didn't try anything from Old Dominion, Sweet Water, DogFishHead, Brooklyn Brewery, and some others.

At the beginning of this post I mentioned that the Fest was a reminder. As good as the above sounds, you're still wandering around in 90 degree heat with 80-90% humidity in the sun and heat. In weather like that, drinking beer and dehydrating myself, my endurance wasn't what it should be.

It definately put me in the mood to go out and try some new brews...so maybe it was Mission Accomplished anyway. Good thing July is American Beer Month.

Well, I think I got some things worked out on the site.

I had some problems the last time I upgraded MovableType from 3.14 to 3.15. It looks like I goofed up the upgrade and missed some files. When I started messing with ecto again, I got some errors updating the site, tracked them down and it showed that I missed something in my last upgrade. I pulled the full download of MovableType 3.17 and went through directory by directory and updated everything again.

It looks like it's working now, which is nice. Hopefully I'll be motivated to keep up with things on the site now. I need to do some cleaning of the filesystem on the server...there's a lot of extra directories and files that aren't linked anywhere that I need to decide what to do with. I also have MT installed a little weird and I need to take the time someday to work that out.

I re-rolled my trial of ecto, so I lost the draft I had of a pen review I was working on, so that needs to be started over. Not that it's a bad thing because I have a lot to add since I first thought of the posting. I'm playing with fountain pens these days. :)

Updates, or lack thereof

|

Well, obviously I'm neglecting the website. Great.

I was going pretty well for a while there. I was really excited about Photon to help make dumping images to the website easier. Then I was looking into ecto to make posting easier.

Then Photon stopped working. Then ecto expired. Then life got in the way.

Am I going to do anything about it? I hope so.

I updated the software on the site a little bit. I'm going to see if I can fix my software situation a bit. I'm going to try to get that pen review out that I've had in draft for a few weeks. Hopefully I can get my job stuff straightened out.

The post yesterday from ecto seems to have worked. I'm thinking that I should probably work this into some kind of workflow to keep the blog stuff moving. Maybe I'll get good at it someday.

Part of the "workflow" comment is coming from what I've been getting into these days. I've been reading Getting Things Done by David Allen and have started picking up on ways to get myself organized and productive. I'm already seeing improvements...let's hope it keeps up.

Testing post from ecto

| | Comments (0)

I'm testing out a posting from an application called ecto. ecto is an OSX application that automates some of the work that I'd need to do to post things to the blog. It does some stuff like some automatic trackback pings to technorati and a couple places.

I'm trying to work out some ideas to make it easier to post, so maybe I can put something more interesting on the site.

I figured this was going to happen. I promised myself that I'd get back into keeping up with this thing and then I didn't. Figures. It's been over a month since the last update now. That's not cool.

What's going on? Well, I'm still doing taxes (late in the season for me to be still messing with it). Getting ready to grill out for the first time this year..probably tomorrow or Tuesday.

Getting ready to try GTD. Not sure if I'll have the discipline to keep up with it but if I can use it to get my shit together, I'm going to do it.

One of these days I'll be able to keep a stream of thought together enough to post something interesting here...today's not the day obviously.

The photoblog is working...sorta

|

Still working out the photoblog thing. Posted a photo tonight. Still some things to work out but I'm getting there..

Upgraded MT to 3.15

|

Move along...nothing to see here...

I did a bunch of looking around yesterday and found a nice piece of software that will make it easy for me to set the photo section up. There's a plugin for iPhoto called Photon that will let me directly export photo sets to the Movable Type system that I'm using to run the site here.

I set up a secondary blog already. I need to work out how I want to organize the photos from there, and then get started. I might end up finding a new template for the blog that's better suited to this kind of content. Not sure how much time I want to devote to it at this point.

Upgraded Movable Type

|

Since I'm trying to keep up with the site, I upgrade MovableType to 3.12. No obvious breakages which is nice.

Next trick will be to get the RSS to full formatted text. Then maybe an article or something later.

More Housekeeping on the site

|

I'm convinced that I'm never really going to get around to revamping the loon-n-feel of the site. The MT default looks and works well enough for me and I don't know if I really want to do something to make the site more high maintenance. I don't want to get in the habit of fiddling with everything like I used to.

Maybe I'll give it another try when I find a good web editor (or finally give in to buying BBEdit).

Upgraded Movable Type

Yummy bugfixes. 3.11 now. Looks like I missed it by a week. Doesn't look like any of the fixes were security related do it really doesn't matter, I think. Whee.

Got it...

Well, now that I've been completely distracted by the blog thing...

I had to nuke all of the built pages on the front end. The index.html was fine, but the system wasn't displaying it for some reason. All fixed.

Back to work.

Figures. I got my first comment spam. Deleted it. Will be looking into fixing it later.

I've been slacking on the site, as usual. I will get to it. I still have the vacation stuff to get to and the Virginia Wine Festival thing that we did this afternoon.

See y'all.

We're back from 10 days at Fenwick Island. The weather was bad, but I found itmostly relaxing. Still getting back into the swing of things at home. Need to unpack and get back into a "daily grind" state of mind.

This is the new site. I finally have a webhost again. Let's hope that they last longer than the last one.

Lots of things to do before the site's back in business. I need to get the MovableType system the way I want ti, thenstart uploading all of the photo stuff. I might set up a sub-site so that Margo and I each have our own personal section. Will see.
